It may be difficult to remember since the glory days of Sørensen, Mignolet and Mannone, but there was a time when the Black Cats didn't always have a world class goalkeeper to rely on. With rolled-up sleeves and flamboyant hair, Lionel Perez was something of a bizarre figure at Sunderland from his arrival in 1996. Although Michael Gray is usually blamed (sympathetically) for missing that crucial penalty in the thrilling playoff final with Charlton, Perez must be seen as the main culprit at Wembley that day. Not only did he concede four goals - at least one directly his fault - but he also put a very feeble effort in the shootout itself. Interestingly, in 2005 Perez was caught jabbing his fingers into an opposing manager's eyes while coaching Stevenage Borough. Nice fella.
