At first glance, Alan Stubbs' Sunderland seems to be in the same boat as Pascal Chimbonda's - both transferred for one season to Wearside from a club they much preferred, only to be swiftly returned after a series of unremarkable games for the Black Cats. Yet Stubbs is vilified on Wearside to this day in a way that Chimbonda never was, all stemming from a Tim Cahill goal at the Stadium of Light. Cahill's late winner was reportedly celebrated by boyhood Everton fan Stubbs, a contracted Sunderland player at the time, from a private box in the stadium. The defender claimed it was only his Evertonian guests celebrating next to him, but his pleas fell on deaf ears and a move back to Goodison was quickly agreed. His form improved dramatically.
