In terms of utility defenders, Sunderland could do far worse than keep an eye on Gaston Silva. The Uruguayan captained his country and under 20 level and has recently started to break into the senior squad. Capable of playing centre back or left back, Silva stands a commanding 6'1" and is still only 21 years of age. He is relatively untested in the European leagues, having made just four Serie A appearances since transferring to Torino last summer, but gathered valuable Europa League experience in the process.
