10 Players Who Did Nothing At Chelsea (But Excelled For Their Country)

6. Mark Schwarzer

What more can one say - it takes a special player to remain a nation€™s first-choice keeper for two decades. Since making his debut in 1993, Mark Schwarzer has gone on to make 109 appearances for Australia, appearing in two World Cups before finally bringing the curtain down on a glorious reign between the posts for his country in November of last year. His finest hour in an Aussie jersey arguably came in the play-off for the 2006 World Cup. With Uruguay holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg, Australia forced a penalty shoot-out where the Middlesbrough keeper saved two to see Australia emerge victorious. While the Aussies qualified from their group, and were only dumped out of the tournament via a contentious penalty decision against Italy in the next round, they failed to make it past the group stages in 2010. Now 42 years old, one would predict that this is surely Mark Schwarzer€™s last campaign as a professional footballer, and he will be bowing out as a Chelsea reserve. Since penning a short-term deal in the summer of 2013, he has gone on to make just four appearances for the Blues, although the oldest player in Champions League history did take to the pitch to keep a clean sheet in last season€™s semi-final clash with Athletico Madrid. Still, for a player with over 750 club appearances to his name, watching the game from the stands every week must be an alien experience for him.
