Midfielder Mark Kinsella played a huge role in the rise of Charlton Athletic at the turn of the Millennium but starting all four of the Republic of Ireland's fixtures at the 2002 World Cup put him in the shop window for a move elsewhere and after losing his place in the Addicks side, he linked up with Aston Villa.

The then-30-year-old made an impression during his opening months at the club but Villa endured a torrid campaign under Graham Taylor. After suffering an injury, Kinsella struggled to find a way back into the team and he would make just two Premier League appearances in the second half of the season.

Taylor was replaced by David O'Leary in the summer but not even a change in manager led to Kinsella winning back his place. He played just twice in the league before Christmas and he would eventually be allowed to join West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer.

He would remain at The Hawthorns for just six months before he found himself at Walsall, who were competing in League One. In the space of two years, Kinsella had gone from playing in the World Cup against Germany and Spain to playing at the third tier of English football.
