During the 2009-10 season, Billy Paynter partnered Charlie Austin at Swindon Town and the pair joined forces to score 49 goals between them as the Robins almost secured promotion from League One.

Paynter had the option of extending his stay at the County Ground alongside Austin but while his strike partner continued at the third tier, Paynter made the leap to the Championship with Leeds United and it was a move that only brought disappointment.

An injury in pre-season delayed Paynter's debut but even though he would make his bow in October, it would take him until March to net his first goal for the club and that would remain his only effort in 23 outings in all competitions.

He made an appearance off the bench on the opening day of his second campaign but another injury would restrict his availability and after a goalless loan spell with Brighton & Hove Albion, he would score his only other two goals for Leeds against Peterborough United towards the end of the season.

In August 2012, the club would cut their losses and allow Paynter to join Doncaster Rovers on a free transfer after a period of just three goals and 11 starts in two years. Paynter helped Doncaster to promotion that season but he again failed in the Championship and was subsequently loaned out, leaving him with a combined record of three goals in 46 second-tier matches.
