3. Lee Sharpe

There was no shame in losing his place in the Manchester United side to a young David Beckham but at the age of 25, Lee Sharpe needed to find a club where he could fulfil the potential he had shown at Old Trafford.

When he was made Leeds United's joint record signing in 1996, everything looked promising for Sharpe who also had ambitions for a return to the England squad but just a month after his arrival, the Yorkshire giants changed manager and George Graham replaced Howard Wilkinson.

Sharpe still played on a regular basis during his first campaign at Elland Road, scoring a total of six goals in 30 appearances in all competitions, but his performances were largely average at best and Graham was not getting the most out of him.

That may have been down to Graham's managerial style which did not focus on attacking intent - Leeds scored just 28 Premier League goals that season - or it was Sharpe's own doing but regardless, his second season would be decimated by a serious knee injury and that all but ended his time at the club.

From then onwards, Sharpe never recovered. He spent time at Sampdoria and Bradford City before ending his career at 32.
