10 Players Who Probably Regret Joining Newcastle

9. Jon Dahl Tomasson

He was being heralded as Europe's next superstar before his move to Newcastle in 1997 and went on to make 112 appearances for Denmark, netting an impress 52 times. So what went wrong for Tomasson on Tyneside? How come Kenny Dalglish couldn't get the best out of the Danish prospect? The 6ft-tall striker was making waves in his native country, scoring goals for fun at Koge and then Heerenveen, so his signing seemed to be an acute bit of business by the hierarchy on Tyneside. However, following Alan Shearer's injury early in the youngster's maiden - and only - season, the Dane found himself hoist into the position of Newcastle's main man - a role which came far too soon for the up and coming star. Following the excitement of making a real coup in the transfer market, Magpies fans soon became disillusioned with the youngster's presence in the team as well as his goal-to-game ratio and he finished his Newcastle United career with the poor stats of three goals in 23 games. However, Newcastle's loss turned out to be a host of other clubs' gain as Tomasson went on to have successful spells with several top European clubs, including Feyenoord and AC Milan, and become a household name in European football. It must have been a regret of his though that he never got the chance to return to the Premier League to show his true worth.
