10 Players Who Probably Regret Leaving Leeds United

4. Matt Smith

When Matt Smith was allocated the number nine shirt at Leeds United and awarded a three-year contract in the summer of 2014, it appeared that he would remain at Elland Road for the foreseeable future but two weeks later, the club would accept an £800,000 bid from Fulham and the target man would make the move to London.

The turn of events echoed the theory that nothing that happens at Leeds should come as a surprise but Smith still had the option of turning down the transfer. For a player who had began his career in non-league, being handed such a famous shirt at the club should have led to his best years but instead, he has spent them in and out of an inconsistent Fulham side.

As of April 2016, just a third of his Championship appearances have come from the starting lineup and his best form since leaving Leeds came in League One while on loan at Bristol City.

After failing to score for Fulham since the start of the 2015-16 campaign, it remains to be seen what lies ahead for Smith but he could easily find himself in the third tier by the end of the next transfer window.
