Simon Walton burst onto the scene at Leeds United at the age of 16 but such an impact probably had a detrimental effect on his career as a whole given it led to his departure from the club before he had reached 19.

The club's supporters wanted a local figure to replace Alan Smith and backing the rise to prominence of Walton helped the teenager in his first season as he made 33 appearances in all competitions

With Leeds gaining more stability during the 2005-06 campaign and mounting a sustained push for promotion, Walton was limited to just five matches in all competitions but he had still represented the Yorkshire giants 38 times at a very young age.

However, off the back of a season lacking in minutes, he joined Premier League Charlton Athletic, who jumped at the chance to sign him for a relatively low fee of £1m, but in a year at The Valley, Walton did not play a competitive fixture for the Addicks.

After failing to make the grade at Queens Park Rangers, Walton signed for Plymouth Argyle but it would take years before he would be trusted with regular action at Home Park.

Walton has spent the 2015-16 season at League Two Crawley Town.
