10 Players Who Probably Regret Leaving Spurs

1. Jermain Defoe

Media Image LtdMedia Image LtdJermain Defoe's move to Toronto FC in Major League Soccer seems like the ultimate waste of talent of a Tottenham Hotspur player. The striker might be 31, but he is still incredibly physically fit and looked like a major goal threat in every game he played for Spurs until the day he left. Defoe enjoyed two spells at Spurs, making a total of 363 appearances and scoring 143 goals in the process - making him the club's fifth highest goalscorer of all time in all competitions - but he moved to Canada in January of this year for a fee of around £6 million and a pay-rise that sees him potentially earning £90,000 every week. Although he's still a good player, Defoe is in the twilight of his career and this could be seen by some people as a good move. However, Defoe moved with the blessing of England coach Roy Hodgson, on the basis that he would still be likely to go to the 2014 World Cup with the England squad. Unfortunately for Defoe, he only made the standby list - and this is the main reason Defoe will regret the move. He will now, most likely, never play for England again - certainly not in a major tournament - and he has been linked with a move back to England with Harry Redknapp's Queens Park Rangers. Defoe has 8 goals in 9 games for Toronto so far, but his frustration at his omission from the England squad can't be denied. Indeed, it may have manifested in a recent match when he argued with team-mate Gilberto over a free kick (which Gilberto went on to score).
