When Andrey Arshavin made the move to North London from Zenit St. Petersburg, he promised the world but during the four years he spent at Arsenal, delivered very little.

Despite eventually turning into the stick disaffected Arsenal fans used to beat Arsene Wenger with over his incompetent spending, the £15 million winger started incredibly brightly; his first ten starts for the club saw him score six goals (including four against Liverpool to earn a tight 4-4 draw) and provide five assists. Despite only being there for half of his debut season, the Russian still came second in the Player of the Year awards with an impressive 20% of the vote.

After this ridiculously promising start things went downhill for Arshavin. It was evident that the Russian was becoming unhappy at Arsenal, reflected by his negative body language and disinterested attitude on the field. The player - who was evidently precociously talented - lacked the motivation to use his skills, gradually becoming more passionate about his outside interests, chiefly, his fashion designs. His best years as a footballer went to waste rotting on the Arsenal bench, to the point that Arshavin revealed he suffered through bouts of depression whilst not involved.

Now 37, Arshavin is seeing out the final years of his career in Kazakhstan. That famous Euro 2008 shrug after his goal against the Netherlands seemingly foreshadowed his career to come.
