10 Players Who Successfully Played For Newcastle & Sunderland

10. Steven Caldwell

NUFC: 1998 - 2004 (37 games, 2 goal) SAFC: 2004 - 2007 (81 games, 5 goals) Caldwell began his career at Newcastle alongside younger brother Gary and scored in a Tyne-Tees derby match against Middlesbrough in November 2002. But ultimately he failed to carve himself a regular slot in the first-team setup under Sir Bobby Robson and was subsequently released in 2004 after playing just 37 times in six years at St James' Park. With the freedom to sign for any club in the world Stirling-born centre-back ended up in Wearside when he agreed to drop down a division to join Sunderland on a free transfer.
To his credit it was a move that propelled his career forward as he forged a solid union with Gary Breen at the heart of the Mackems rearguard in the promotion season and remained a regular during the 2005/06 campaign in which they suffered relegation after just a single season in the Premier League.
