Since the summer of 2008, Jermaine Pennants career has been nothing short of a joke. Three league appearances for Liverpool, 13 for Portsmouth, 25 for Real Zaragoza, 65 for Stoke City and 15 for Wolves have made up the last six years of this former Arsenal starlets career. Without a club since being released in January, the 31 year old former jailbirds career looks to be going the same sad way as David Bentleys. What is ludicrous about the last six years of Pennants career, however, was that while it featured a sporadic substitute appearances for a host of random clubs and just four league goals, it also produced significant interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid. The club hierarchy must have been infiltrated by a Catalonian spy at the time, with the club having inexplicably hired Spurs flop Juande Ramos and would soon sign West Ham misfit Julien Faubert. Another on the agenda was Liverpool flop Jermaine Pennant, who somehow moved to top of Real Madrids transfer target list in December 2008. Whats even more inexplicable, however, is that Pennant turned the Galacticos down. According to reports, the £3.5 million move broke down due to Pennants extortionate wage in excess of £60k p/wk demands, leaving Pennant with the alternative of a relegation battle at Fratton Park. Whats more mind-boggling - that Madrid wanted him in the first place, or that the Liverpool sub had the gall to price himself out of a move?
