''Who says that he cannot be the central striker who Real are seeking? With Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo he could score 45 goals. He would be perfect for their game. - David Trezeguets agent, Antonio Caliendo, June 2009.
Its in the agents job description to talk up their client, promoting them for lucrative job opportunities elsewhere, but not even David Trezeguet nor his agent could surely have believed the above statement. In his prime, the French striker was a supremely clinical finisher, but he was 31 years old and had bagged just one goal in 12 appearances the previous season for The Old Lady. It was hardly sparkling evidence that he was going to score 44 more for Los Blancos the following season. Real Madrid werent looking to make Trezeguet their number one striker anyway - they simply needed reinforcements, with Ruud van Nistelrooy recovering from a long-term injury, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar having been shown the door and a loan bid for Hernan Crespo having failed. With David Villa and Karim Benzema among their top targets, the Frenchman was but a fall-back option. However, when the move failed to materialise, the desperate Frenchman was forced to push his way back into the Juventus fold, before departing for Spanish minnows Hercules in 2011. Certainly a far cry from the lure and prestige of the Santiago Bernabeu.
