Currently at Sao Paolo, Juanfran established himself as one of the best defenders during his eight defining years at Atletico Madrid, but he actually started his professional career with the crosstown rivals.

After starring for Real Madrid's B team, he was promoted to the senior side in 2004. Then a winger by trade, Juanfran was limited to only six league appearances all season and didn't score even once.

After some promising spells with Espanyol and Osasuna, the Spaniard joined the Rojiblancos where he enjoyed tremendous success and also transformed into a legendary full-back.

Juanfran was a key member of the Atletico side which won the La Liga in 2014, the Europa League in 2018, and also reached Champions League finals in 2014 and 2016.
