After a poor first season with Liverpool, Dejan Lovren has publicly declared that he will show fans why Brendan Rodgers paid £20m to bring him to Merseyside last summer.

Lovren has played in both of Liverpool's opening fixtures, from which they have taken maximum points. The Croatian will be grateful for a relatively low-key but effective start to the campaign, after a series of high-profile blunders last season. 

This could just be the year that Lovren shows the same form as he did at Southampton, where he proved himself as a defender capable of cutting it at the top level. Should he have another nightmare season, however, and he could find himself either sitting on the bench regularly or heading for the Anfield exit door.
