10 Premier League Record Signings Who Were A Waste Of Money

10. Asamoah Gyan

When Sunderland signed relatively unknown striker Asamoah Gyan from Rennes for a whopping £13M it shocked the fans, but the Ghanian international proved them wrong by scoring 11 times in 33 gams for the Black Cats. Gyan looked like money well spent: in 2010 he was voted BBC African Footballer of the Year and made 17 appearances for Ghana scoring seven goals. But then things began to unravel. After a moderately successful first season at Sunderland, Gyan was loaned out to Al-Ain of the United Arab Emirates never to play for them again. He found his shooting boots again abroad, but Sunderland fans were left counting the cost of a single season. In the grand scheme of things, £13M for one season is an incredible amount of money. Through no fault of his own, Asamoah Gyan will remembered in the Premier League as a waste of not only money but talent. Now playing in the UAE League, he was most recently involved in the murder investigation of close friend and rapper Castro after he went missing while the pair holidayed together in Ghana.
