Upon his appointment as England boss back in 2016, Gareth Southgate was called the 'easy option' and a 'yes man' by various sections of the media. Some thought he was 'too kind' to make tough decisions and that he lacked the experience and know-how needed to lead England to any kind of glory. How wrong they were.

The former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough defender has more than proven to be up to the task over the course of the last few weeks. He made smart selections for his final squad, unafraid to drop certain players who weren't performing and take risks on some young up-and-comers, adjusting that tired 4-4-2 England formation into something more modern and better-suited to England's strengths.

His own experience as an England player seemed key as he successfully established great relationships with the press, the fans, and most importantly, the players. Southgate's tactical nous, man management, and calm approach were all key in England's campaign, and as long as he's in charge, the Three Lions are in good hands.
