2. The Show Of Respect For Derek Jeter
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIZZG6sgz7E The scene at Fenway Park this past weekend was indescribable. Derek Jeters last regular season series took place in Fenway Park, and the former enemy territory rolled out the red carpet for the retiring Yankees shortstop. When he was taken out of the lineup on Friday for rest after a very emotional last game at Yankee Stadium the previous night, fans (both Yankees and Red Sox alike) were chanting for Jeter to make a pinch hit appearance. Jeter merchandise was being sold at Red Sox stores inside Fenway, including a
special shirt just for the final Fenway series. The Red Sox honored Jeter before his final game on Sunday with a pre-game ceremony and left a heartwarming message for Jeter on their famous scoreboard.
Columns have been written about how Jeter bridged the gap between Yankees and Red Sox fans. The vibe in Fenway Park was very relaxed for a Yanks/Sox game (considering neither team had anything to play for) and everybody was there to honor Jeter, no matter which team they rooted for. Knowing how the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry has been over the past few decades, this show of affection is absolutely unheard of, and signals the start of a kinder, gentler rivalry.
