5. Experimental Manager

For too long, England fans have felt that the team lacked any real identity or dynamic playing style. Under Roy Hodgson, the Three Lions felt stale and predictable. Gareth Southgate, despite not having a very impressive managerial record to speak of, has at least proven that he isn't afraid to take some risks and make a few big calls.

The former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough player has experimented with the formation of the Three Lions since taking over after Big Sam was unceremoniously dumped from the head role. Southgate has tried to take some inspiration from leading European managers like Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola in testing out alternative formations and possession-based football, as well as springing a few surprises with his squad and team selections in friendly games. His usage of Kyle Walker in a centre back position, for example, has proven very successful so far.

Another advantage Southgate has is that he was manager of the England U21 squad for a few years, only losing 3 out of 33 games. He understands the intricacies of international football and is familiar with many of the teams and players he'll be going up against in this summer's tournament.
