10 Reasons Why History Is Not On Newcastle's Side For Relegation Fight

4. Sunderland Played Chelsea In Their Last Game Of The 2008-09 Season And Survived

Carrying on with the same theme, on May 24th, 2009, Sunderland hosted Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on the final day of the Premier League season. Despite losing 3-2 to the Blues - goals from Nicolas Anelka, Salomon Kalou and Ashley Cole gave the visitors the victory, with Kieran Richardson and Kenwyne Jones getting Sunderland's two consolation goals - the Black Cats survived in the top flight at Newcastle's expense. It just so happens that on May 24th, 2015, Sunderland play Chelsea again on the final day of the Premier League season - although this time they must travel to Stamford Bridge, rather than welcoming the Blues to the North East. The omens are really stacking up against the Magpies here - and it could be joy on Wearside and despair on Tyneside on the final day of the season once again, just as it was in 2009.
