Although it may only be a single digit on the back of a black and white jersey, the number nine of Newcastle is immersed in a rich heritage and the legacies of past players who've carried the hopes, expectations  and responsibility of an entire city  that comes with wearing the iconic shirt designed for resilient shoulders.

Newcastle were blessed with divine collection of no. 9's during the 1990s, individuals who defined an era during one of the most successful and memorable periods for the club. Micky Quinn, David Kelly, Andy Cole and Les Ferdinand are all still revered on Tyneside, whilst Alan Shearer obviously needs no introduction.

In fact, during the 90's we approximate that Newcastle's no. 9's rattled in 239 of the 835 goals scored between 1 January 1990 and 31 December 1999 . Of the five players to have worn nine on their back during that decade, it was Shearer who found the net on the most frequent basis scoring 74 times - meaning he accounted for a rather apt 9% of the grand total.

We doubt that modern day number nines such as Obafemi Martins or Andy Carroll will hold a similar level of esteem to the likes of Cole or Ferdinand in 20 years time, although the shirts current occupant, Papiss Cisse, is currently well liked by supporters after a somewhat redemptive campaign.
