10 Refereeing Decisions That Totally Screwed Newcastle United

8. Uriah Rennie Vs Aston Villa (07.08.1999)

Scoreline: Newcastle 0-1 Aston Villa Uriah Rennie wasn't loved by Newcastle supporters during his colourful refereeing career and being the first referee to send Alan Shearer off (on the first game of the 1999-00 season and the striker's 100th game for the Magpies). Rennie controversially dismissed Shearer for a challenge in the second half. Shearer and Colin Calderwood challenged for the ball. With the defender on the ground, referee Rennie brandished a red card, to the astonishment of even Villa players. Villa took advantage of the England captain's sending off four minutes later when Julian Joachim met Mark Delaney's cross from the right and glanced a header past Magpies keeper Steve Harper to make it 1-0.
