10 Shocking Newcastle United Failures

4. Silvio Maric

Signed from: Dinamo Zagreb Transfer fee: £4.2million League Appearances: 23 League Goals: 0 Newcastle United faced Dinamo Zagreb in the 1997-98 Champions League qualifying round (a game the Magpies won 4-3 on aggregate with a brace from John Beresford in the home leg) and were mystified by the Croatian side's attacking playmaker. Now, either Newcastle signed the wrong man or Silvio Maric had remarkably lost all of his talent during the year that Newcastle waited before signing him. The midfielder was far too lightweight and in 23 appearances he failed to score a single goal and although having a nice touch and style of play he drifted into the reserves before being sold to Porto in 2000.
