10 Most Shocking UFC Drug Failures

5. Chael Sonnen

I feel like starting this entry with "refer to everything that has happened involving Chael Sonnen in the month of June 2014." However, lets go back a bit. After his first title fight with Anderson Silva in 2010, Chael P. Sonnen was suspended for elevated testosterone levels. He felt he had acquired an exemption for TRT to treat hypogonadism; the CSAC, acting on the testimony of the NSAC's Keith Kizer, found otherwise. Fast forward to 2014. Sonnen had lost to Silva, again, lost to Jon Jones, defeated Shogun, lost to Rashad Evans, and was set to face Wanderlei Silva. Then Silva, as discussed earlier, dodged a drug test, and was replaced by Vitor Belfort, who in turn announced he'd failed an out of competition drug test in February, and would have to plead his case for a license with the NSAC. And then Sonnen himself tested positive for banned substances, anastrozole and clomiphene, drugs used to wean him off TRT, the controversial testosterone replacement therapy used by athletes with low testosterones levels that was banned in February 2014 - after Silva's failed test. Oh what a tangled web. Sonnen then shocked the world, announcing his retirement, that he and his wife were having a baby, thanks to the treatment he was on, and that if he had to do it all over again, he'd do it the same way. Somehow, Sonnen managed to come out of his second drug failure more popular than ever, to the point that people don't even seem to remember that there will be two championship title fights on July's UFC 175 card, on which Sonnen was to appear. You have to hand it to Chael, there's no scandal he can't win from.
