10 Most Shocking UFC Knockouts
10. Johny Hendricks vs. Jon Fitch - UFC 141
It was only about two and half years ago when Jon Fitch was considered to be a top five welterweight in the world. While his style was far from crowd pleasing, he was efficient in wearing his opponents out through control and usually being on the winning end of hard fought decisions. Those victories still weren't exactly a boost towards his stock. He was feeling immense pressure going into this fight, after Dana White publicly criticized his style in an interview with Ariel Helwani. He was matched up against Johny Hendricks, who was still relatively unknown at the time. Hendricks' biggest win was against Mike Pierce, which ended in a split decision. The matchup was intriguing because of Hendricks wrestling achievements to go along with his one-punch knockout power. It would be a massive challenge for Fitch to take him down and smother him like he has to past opponents. People were still unsure of Hendricks, due to his cardio issues and lack of agility. We never got to see who had the wrestling advantage because Hendricks knocked him out with his signature straight left hand in 12 seconds. It was the same punch that knocked out Martin Kampmann a year later.
While it may not look shocking in 2014, it was shocking at that time. You look at the career status of both fighters at the time, along with who they fought against. Jon Fitch had fought Georges St. Pierre, BJ Penn, and Thiago Alves twice. Hendricks wasn't battle tested yet against such a top level opponent. It didn't matter that night and the fight couldn't have ended more definitively. The upset victory put Hendricks on the map, as someone to look out for and hes never looked back since that knockout.
