10 Most Sickening Injuries In Sport History

2. Kevin Ware (Basketball)

Leg breaks are not a fun matter in the first place, but when the bone pierces the skin is the time when most of us suddenly start to feel sick. Sadly for Kevin Ware, that is precisely what he suffered through whilst playing for the Louisville Cardinals in a game against Duke Blue Devils at the Elite Eight championship in March 2013. Ware had just jumped to block a shot, but landed extremely awkwardly at the side of the court. The immediate impact of his landing caused a compound fracture to his right leg, with the snapped upper section of the bone poking through his skin as the lower half dangled below. It is a truly sickening sight to behold, both due to how unnatural it is to witness the human bone protruding in such a manner, but also due to the instant dismay of all who saw the incident. Not only does Ware scream in understandable anguish, but his team mates who are sat mere feet away from him visibly recoil in horror of what they've just seen. Slowly, the news spreads across the court, reaching all players (most of whom drop to the floor), the fans and of course, the commentators with their live audience. It's a horrendously gorey injury which you would imagine would be the end of a professional career, but amazingly, Ware made his comeback off the bench in an exhibition match the very next season. Whether he can still achieve his potential is yet to be seen, but to overcome such an injury in such a short period of time is a truly remarkable feat.
