10 Spurs Players Who Should Have Earned More England Caps
2. Jonathan Woodgate
Caps: 8 That Jonathan Woodgate would only ever make 8 appearances in an England shirt is nothing short of disastrous. Simply put, Woodgate is one of the most talented defenders in modern football history - not just in England, hence the fact that he signed for Real Madrid back in 2004. Despite his obvious talent, Woodgate's persistent injury problems contributed to him becoming something of a journeyman. In his three and a half year stint at White Hart Lane with Spurs, he only made 49 Premier League appearances. As with all of his other teams - Leeds United, Newcastle United, Real Madrid, Middlesbrough (twice, it's where he plays now) and Stoke City - Woodgate would always perform admirably and reliably when he was on the pitch - it's just that he wasn't on the pitch anywhere near enough. A fully fit Woodgate would undoubtedly have been a mainstay in England's defence for years. Therefore, it's very disappointing for both the player and English football in general that he couldn't stay fit.
