10 Spurs Players Who Should Have Earned More England Caps
10. Gary Mabbutt
Caps: 16 Gary Mabbutt was at Spurs for nearly sixteen years and he made 482 top flight appearances for the club. The central defender - who could also play in midfield, such was his versatility - also played 147 other competitive games for the Lilywhites and was the club captain for several years prior to his retirement from professional football. Mabbutt - who is diabetic, yet still carved out a successful career as a top professional footballer - won the UEFA Cup with Spurs in 1984 before captaining the club to FA Cup success in 1991. Such was his success and longevity at the top level, it is remarkable that he only won 16 England caps (he scored one goal in those matches). To put that into perspective, both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones - who are just 24 and 23 respectively - have 13 caps each, despite not yet having truly established themselves as guaranteed starters at club level.
