10 Spurs Players Who Should Have Earned More England Caps
6. Michael Dawson
Caps: 4 Like Gary Mabbutt before him, Michael Dawson was a long-standing servant of Spurs. The big, likeable centre back spent nine years at White Hart Lane and made 236 Premier League appearances for the club, as well as 88 appearances in other competitive matches. Also like Mabbutt, he was made club captain, was very reliable and, although he wasn't the classiest of defenders for the club, he would give his all in every single game and played at the top level throughout his time at the club, winning the League Cup with the Lilywhites in 2008 - indeed, Carlos Tevez described Dawson as the outright most difficult player he ever had to play against. It seems quite harsh on him, then, that he would only be capped by England four times. Again, bearing in mind some of the defenders of today, such as Chris Smalling and Phil Jones - who are just 24 and 23 respectively - have 13 caps each already, it really is hard to understand why a regular first-teamer in a club who consistently challenged for the top four wouldn't get more international recognition. Dawson has recently moved to Hull City.
