10 Stats That Show Why Newcastle United Lost To Manchester United

7. Man United Had Five Shots On Target... Newcastle Tested David De Gea Just Twice

Tim Krul will take a lot of the blame for the horrendous clearance that led to Ashley Young's winner, but John Carver will be looking for his forward players to improve their accuracy in front of goal as well. The home side had nine shots but could only test David de Gea twice - when Emmanuel Riviere was closed down by the visiting goalkeeper, and then when Papiss Cisse forced the Spanish stopper into a magnificent diving save in the dying seconds. Cisse in particular had an off night, missing the target on three occasions - including when played clear through by Ayoze Perez on 68 minutes - and that sort of profligacy ultimately cost the home side. Man United mustered just two more shots in total - but crucially they forced four excellent saves from Krul before Young capitalised on the keeper's one mistake all night.
