The Australian shot-stopper had just been released by the Cottagers and, at the age of 40, looked destined for retirement or the MLS. But the Blues took a gamble and took Schwazer on board for the 2013-14 season, despite arguably having a better option in recalling Thibaut Courtois from his impressive loan spell at Atletico Madrid at their disposal. Nevertheless, the former Bradford City man repaid his new club's faith by putting in a number of assured performances in the handful of times he was called upon, notably stepping into the breach to replace the injured Cech in a crucial Premier League game against Liverpool. Schwazer has recently penned a new, one-year contract extension to stay in London for an extra season, in spite of the continued presence of Cech and the return of Courtois.
