10 Strangest Ever Chelsea Signings

9. Tal Ben Haim

Mike Egerton/EMPICS SportMike Egerton/EMPICS SportFollowing underwhelming seasons at Maccabi Tel Aviv and Bolton Wanderers, Tal Ben Haim became an unlikely Chelsea player when he switched Reebok Park with Stamford Bridge in 2007. The centre-back was one of the last players Blues fans would have expected their club to sign considering they had John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho and Alex at the time, and it never came close to working out. Signed by Jose Mourinho, Ben Haim saw his playing opportunities vanish following the Portuguese's departure and appointment of fellow Israeli Avram Grant. The centre-half never got along with his compatriot and was handed an £80,000 club fine for fuming: "I knew nothing good would come for me with Grant as Chelsea coach". It came as no surprise when Ben Haim was sold to Man City after just one year at Stamford Bridge, and even less of a surprise when he again lasted just one season at the Etihad.
