Martín Demichelis's move to Manchester City in 2013 is one of the strangest ever transfers in the history of the Premier League. On 11 July 2013, Demichelis signed for Spanish side Atletico Madrid on a one year contract, ending a controversial spell at Malaga. Astonishingly, less than two months later, the Argentinian signed for City having not made a single appearance for Atletico.

Demichelis arrived at the Etihad in September 2013 for £4.2 million. Just two months prior, he had joined Atletico on a free, and had City acted sooner, they might have landed the defender for absolutely nothing. The 32-year-old's strange decision to bail out on Atletico after just eight weeks was reportedly due to the fact the Spaniards had just signed Toby Alderweireld, with Demichelis suddenly deemed surplus to requirements.

The centre-back made 27 appearances for City last season and, in spite of criticisms about his lack of pace, won the Premier League and League Cup in his debut season in England, and is about to enter his second season with the club.
