10 Strangest Ever Newcastle United Signings

4. Lamine Diatta

When Kevin Keegan sought to patch up a leaky defence just a month into his second stint as Newcastle boss in 2008 he turned to a powerful Senegal stopper with an impressive CV to reinforce his rearguard options. Diatta arrived at St James' Park with a wealth of experience having turned out for Toulouse, Marseille, Rennes, Lyon and St Etienne in France before a short spell at Besiktas.

After buying out his contract at the Turkish giants he caught the attention of Dennis Wise and Tony Jimenez and similarly that of Keegan after a trial. The 32-year-old ended up appearing just twice from the bench in the dying embers of games before being released two months later. A complete waste of time, effort and money.
