10 Summer Football Transfers That Came Completely Out Of Nowhere
8. Robinho - Real Madrid To Manchester City
As the summer transfer deadline crept day closer back in 2008, all signs pointed to Real Madrid starlet Robinho signing for Roman Abramovich's Chelsea side before the window shut.
The Brazilian sensation seemed to have his heart set on a move to London and even told a press conference around that time that, 'I am only thinking of Chelsea and want to play there.'
But, in a move which undoubtedly sits as one of the most unexpected in football history, Manchester City were suddenly purchased by the Abu Dhabi United Group and launched a bid for Chelsea's potential signing. Before the London club knew what hit them, Robinho was photographed standing next to City boss Mark Hughes holding a light blue jersey with his name and number '10' on the back.
Highlighting just how insane and sudden this entire deal actually was, Robinho famously told the press after signing for City that, 'On the last day of transfers, Chelsea made a good offer for me personally, and good for Real Madrid, and it was accepted' , before later correcting himself with, 'Chelsea? No, Manchester. Sorry.'
Unfortunately, after a promising start with the Manchester club, Robinho would end up leaving the club after just two years and struggled to live up to his hype in the years that followed.
