10 Sunderland Cult Heroes From The Premier League Era

8. Wes Brown

Wes Brown may be slowing down in the eyes of some Sunderland fans, but it's hard to deny that he was a true cult hero for a long spell after overcoming his multiple injury problems. Despite being fragile when it came to injuries, the Champions-League winning defender could run into a brick wall and the wall would come out of the situation worse. You'd expect that he'd be more restrained considering his injury record, but no, it just made him even more fearsome. For a big game, with a big striker to mark, there's barely a defender more suited to the job than Wes Brown, and while he is on the decline he still dominated Diego Costa in last season's Premier League encounter. His no nonsense attitude and big-game presence made him a fan favourite.
