10 Terrible Refereeing Decisions That Changed World Cup Games

1. Argentina Vs. England (1986)

Here's another incident that England fans will never forget. It was the 1986 World Cup and England had made it to the quarter final where they would face off against longtime rivals, Argentina. As they prepared for kickoff, little did the players know that this game would become one of the most memorable matches in World Cup history.

The first half was pretty cagey, but Argentina had the best of it, with England goalie Peter Shilton having to be at his best to keep the score at 0-0. Early in the second half, Diego Maradona, one of the greatest footballers to ever play the game, scored that famous goal that would come to be known as the "Hand of God".

England's Steve Hodge made a mess of his clearance and the ball fell towards Maradona. The little Argentinian leaped into the air and punched the ball over the keeper and into the net. Astonishingly, the ref said he saw no handball and the goal stood, with Maradona adding a sensational second a few minutes later and Argentina winning the game 2-1. On the day, Argentina were probably the deserved winners, but the match might have gone another way without Maradona's famous handball.
