10 Things Arsenal Fans Need To Know About Sami Khedira
7. He Is The Creative Anchorman
Unlike the traditional anchorman, Khedira's stats would place him as being a far more offensive midfielder instead.
During the World Cup, Khedira made more key passes than he did tackles or interceptions, and this stat has been used to argue that he is a box to box midfielder, just like Aaron Ramey. But of course there are lies, damn lies and then there are statistics.
What the stats don't show you is that Germany were, more often than not, attacked from the flanks, meaning that Khedira wouldn't be the player to make the tackles or intercept the play. Instead, he orchestrated the midfield and dropped into defence to cover the drifting centre back. The only time his defensive duties were tested were if the immense German back line didn't win the ball themselves - which was pretty rare.
Khedira's positioning and organisational role is paramount to Germany's success, and the statistics don't show it because his teammates did such a great job.
