10 Things Man Utd Want You To Forget About Louis Van Gaal

6. He Joined Ajax As Technical Director, But Resigned After A Fallout With The Club's Manager

Manchester United supporters may defend Van Gaal by showing how he€™s continued adding to his trophy cabinet regardless of what was happening behind the scenes, but what they won€™t want to advertise is that the 63-year-old burned his bridges with yet another of his former sides. Van Gaal opted to once again return to his homeland after being somewhat chased out of Spain, joining former club Ajax as a technical director. But the Dutchman had a publicised fallout with then club manager Ronald Koeman, which not only led to Van Gaal having to tender his resignation, but also soured his relationship with the club and its fans. After the successful period Van Gaal enjoyed as Ajax manager between 1991 and 1997, supporters were left with negative memories of his spell as technical director, undermining Koeman in his role as head coach, and building a negative atmosphere for him to work in. Results weren€™t going well with Ajax in the Champions League at the time, and arguments ensured after Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sold near the end of the transfer window, with his proposed replacement failing a medical. Things came to a head following a 4-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, and the fallout was having a negative effect on the players. Van Gaal€™s resignation was quickly accepted by the club€™s directors immediately after a Champions League defeat to Maccabi Haifa. €œVan Gaal's departure ended a period of increasing tension with coach Ronald Koeman, which had affected the team's performances. Van Gaal wanted more involvement with the players. Koeman openly clashed with the technical director, saying after the thrashing in Munich, that the club's expectations for his young and inexperienced squad were unrealistic,€ as reported by CNN.
