10 Things Newcastle Fans Need To Know About Portland Timbers 2

2. Portland's Diehard Fans Are Called "The Timbers Army"... And The Club Have Sold Out Every Single MLS Home Match To Date

Portland's diehard fans are so committed to supporting their side that they have sold out every single MLS match in their history. The club have even capped season-ticket sales at 15,300 in order to allow other fans to attend games - but there is still a waiting list of at least 10,000, by far the largest in the entire MLS. With the main supporters group being named the "Timbers Army" - formerly known as the "Casade Rangers", in reference to a group of mountains in the Pacific Northwest - they form a group of some 4,000-plus members in section 107. "The Woodshed" area as it is known is intended to replicate the traditional European-style rooting sections seen at the likes of Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion - with the supporters singing all match donned in flags and scarves, as well as beating drums and throwing smoke bombs. Interestingly, their name change from Cascade Rangers to Timbers Army came about because they did not want to show any favouritism to Scottish side Rangers, with the Portland club having similar playing colours to Glasgow Celtic. It'll be interesting to see if the Timbers Army come out to support their reserve side in force against Premier League opposition in Newcastle - and you get the sneaky suspicion they probably will...
