10 Things Sunderland Must Do To Avoid Relegation

5. Give Pickford A Chance

Every so often a diamond is unearthed from Sunderland's youth academy. First it was Jordan Henderson, then Jack Colback, to an extent Duncan Watmore, and now it's young goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's turn. His loan spell at Preston saw the Washington-born stopper keep 13 clean sheets in 27 games, and equally impressive performances for England's U21s has seen his stock rise considerably. Costel Pantilimon has been unusually shaky this season, while Vito Mannone hasn't been on top form for a long time, so why not give Pickford a chance? He made his first team Sunderland debut at Arsenal in the FA Cup, and played very well, despite conceding three goals he couldn't do anything about. If he is the long-term Number 1, giving him time to develop at the highest level could be invaluable. He's ready.
