10 Things We Learned From Doncaster Vs. Sunderland

8. The Defence Is STILL Self-Destructive

Last season's theme was spectacular own goals and horror mistakes, and Wednesday night provided plenty of evidence to suggest the same will take place this time around. Within 10 minutes, Patrick Van Aanholt had already managed to horribly slice a clearance behind himself and onto the left-hand post of Costel Pantilimon's goal. Sloppy marking resulted in Doncaster's first goal, and Rodwell's hesitation in defence during the second half led to Rovers simply pinching the ball and firing home. Seb Coates slid over to give the hosts another chance, John O'Shea was outpaced on a couple of occasions, and generally Doncaster were allowed to wander up to the backline with ease. The defenders in the squad are good enough, but the combination of who plays needs to be worked out immediately.
