Luke Shaw seems to have overcome his injury problems from last season and is set for a long run in the side as first choice left-back. He and new signing Matteo Darmian have the full-back positions locked down, something United haven’t had since perhaps Denis Irwin and Gary Neville.

They aren’t afraid to bomb forward: I think United can expect a few more assists from the full back positions this year. And both look assured when defending against wingers. In particular Darmian looks an expert in showing a winger on to his weaker side and is no stranger to putting a tackle in, although against Brugge there were a couple of occasions in which he was a little too forceful and mistimed, earning himself a booking.

This kind of aggression will only endear him to the fans though, as long as he keeps it under control.
