10 Things We Learned From Newcastle's Open Training Session

6. When You Give The Fans Something To Shout About They Will Respond

An estimated 13,000 Newcastle United supporters of all ages flocked to St James' Park for the fun day and opening training session on Tuesday. Considering the diabolical state John Carver left the Toon in at the end of last season, that is some achievement, even if it was the summer holidays and a vast majority of those present were family and small children. Yet that's exactly who these occasions should be for. Aside from a few complaints about parents being unable to take their prams into the ground, the vast majority of those present seemed to really enjoy the experience. There was zorb football, bouncy castles and other kids' attractions outside the ground, as well as the training session on show inside St James' to enjoy afterwards. The children loved the experience. Yes they got a little bored due to the length of the training session, but then the coaching staff would grab their attention straight back by mixing it up with something different. Events like this should inspire the younger generations, and this one certainly did. Newcastle need to continue doing things like this, and on a far more regular basis. When Toon fans are given something to aspire to and to cheer on they will respond to it. Newcastle United should take note of this and continue along this path.
