10 Transfers Where Liverpool Dodged A Bullet

9. Clint Dempsey

''Dempsey told me €˜you know what I want to happen€™ and at that time it was to go to Liverpool. I told our people that we had to listen to other clubs, but there was no other club. There have been no firm offers for Clint. Clint feels he needs a move and that move was probably Liverpool, but Liverpool bought new players and no Clint, so we have ended up with a situation with Clint here at Fulham, but he is not committed to the club.€™€™ - Former Fulham boss, Martin Jol, August 2012.
USA forward Clint Dempsey was desperate for the move to Anfield during the summer of 2012. Having outgrown his boots at Craven Cottage, the 60-goal Fulham man was at the centre of a protracted transfer saga with Liverpool, which culminated in his refusing to play in a bid to force a move, signing for Spurs instead, and the Reds issuing an apology for tapping him up.
''Please consider this letter from me to be an additional expression of sincere regret and apology from our club to your club for our actions last summer. Our club can do better and we pledge that it will.۪۪ - Liverpool managing director, Ian Ayre, December 2012.
When they reflect on the transfer, they might wonder what the big fuss was with the 2012 flavour of the month. Dempsey lasted one season at White Hart Lane, scoring 12 goals in 43 appearances, before moving back to the land of semi-retirement in the MLS at the ripe old age of 30.
