10 Transfers Where Liverpool Dodged A Bullet

8. Mohamed Diame

Mohamed Diame is currently one of the most in-form midfielders in the Premier League, having netted an impressive four goals in five outings since his summer switch from West Ham to Hull City. Having expressed his disappointment regarding his failed move to Anfield in 2012, where Kenny Dalglish wanted to snap him up from Wigan Athletic, the 27 year old Senegalese international remains hopeful of his dream being realised in the future.
''In my head, I was already in Liverpool. It was next, I told everyone that I was there. It was as if one of my greatest wishes - to wear the Liverpool shirt - had been accomplished. One day my agent and I went to the training centre to see Kenny Dalglish, who was the coach. He talked to me about the European Cup, my benefits and the pre-season trip to American trip. He sold me the dream! Unfortunately, Dalglish was fired and all negotiations stopped. It will happen one day.۪۪ - Mohamed Diame, May 2014.
While Diame may be performing at the moment, there is quite a bridge in standard between what is acceptable for Hull City and what is required at Anfield. While Diame was a regular fixture at Upton Park, his final season was littered with inconsistent performances and in the end, he was allowed to leave with the consent of his manager, Sam Allardyce. Had Liverpool shelled out for his signature in 2012, they would have been signing yet another medium-sized fish in a small pond, having fallen foul of the same mistake when recruiting the likes of Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Glen Johnson in the past. The good money states that Diame would have lasted a maximum of 18 months at the club, having churned out some mediocre performances, before being deemed surplus to requirements by the expansive Brendan Rodgers.
