Papiss Cisse may have his faults, but the prospect of having Modibo Maiga leading the line for the club is far scarier. The Senegal international may had Geordies tearing their hair out in frustration for the last three years, but he has also given them some wonderful memories, including stunning goals, last-minute winners and a frankly insane run of goalscoring form. The supporters could have been robbed of all that, however, had the woefully profligate Modibo Maigo signed for the club, as was expected.
''I would like the chairman to consider my interest. I want to leave. I met everyone at Newcastle. They want me and it is not just any club. The Premier League is a dream. I dont want to annoy Sochaux, but I want it to be sorted out with Newcastle. - Modibo Maiga, August 2011.
Having been set for a £6 million transfer from Sochaux to Lille, the 24 year old Malians potential move collapsed in the summer of 2011 due to medical concerns over one of his knees. Maigas current situation is that he was just booed off by his own fans during a 0-0 home draw with Rennes at the weekend. On loan at Ligue 1 side Metz, he has failed to net in any of his first five appearances, which shouldnt really surprise the French supporters considering his appalling goalscoring record in England. Having netted six goals in 38 appearances for West Ham, and one goal for QPR in the Championship, Papiss Cisse has never looked better.
