The Premier League had enjoyed plenty of success in Europe towards the end of the noughties. Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea had all reached at least one Champions League final in that decade, marking the dominance of English teams. And while there were foreign stars featuring, there were plenty of English players in those teams too. One such player was Wayne Rooney, United's star striker. Despite having a selection of the game's most talented players at their disposal, England had continually underperformed at major tournaments.

Hopes hung heavily on Rooney to inspire England to greater heights at the 2010 World Cup. However, the Three Lions, then under the management of Fabio Capello, failed to beat the USA in their opening game. Expectations were high among supporters and the travelling fans didn't take long to turn on the players. Another uninspiring display produced a disappointing result when England played out a goalless draw with Algeria in their next game. Fans could be heard booing around the stadium and Rooney wasn't happy about it.

He looked into the camera and said: "Nice to see your own fans booing you. That's what loyal support is." It was a fair comment from Rooney. The fans wanted to voice their displeasure and he held a mirror up to their own behaviour. Of course, it wasn't perceived this way at the time. It was called a rant and Rooney was expected to take the criticism on the chin. England made it through the group before crashing out to Germany in the last 16.
